No.1 -- You can safely ignore anyone that tells you to do a writing course. You should have done one at school. English G.C.S.E.

Your paraphrasing my dear boy, i do believe he also said "then read lots of books, watch how other films are made. look at what they do with highly paid people, expensive equipment, and attempt the same!" Which the following Is good advice, in regards to writing course on my own personaly experience i was down the pub for GCSE English, but in terms of writing courses especially for film there are great technical requirements also required as well as the creative side , and courses are very good for learning about this.

No.2 -- The reason that stuff is industry standard (and expensive) is because it's the best and will give the best results. If you don't want to broadcast or show your work in a serious setting, you don't need that stuff. You can ignore it.

I will agree you there, except for the fact it doesnt have to be expensive. Tis is the art of blaggin that can step in here, and the ability to improvise and adapt. All depends on whether you want to be taken seriously

No.3 -- This is a tricky one, I'll give you that. Again, larking around with your mates would not require budgets, shot tracking etc. However, for Pro or Semi-Pro work (i.e. with people you don't know, official bodies and so on) it's always better to be professional.

Keyword there is professional, if you want to be a proffesional then act line one whether you are doing a shoot with a few mates or a big 100 crew job. On a note, recent test shoot i done for HenryV and deadlights was more of a lads weekend's and whilt it was a lot of fun , have utlimatly paid the price in teh quality of footage that we got in the end. Paper, paper , paper Already for Henry V I have if you were to put it on A4 roughly about 150 pages of stuff, and have yet to even write past the first three pages of screenplay

No.4 -- I agree you don't need to spend a lot of money on stuff to make a good product. BUT, it's a shitload easier if you can. If you don't have the money, then it's no problem, go with what you've got. But, if you HAVE saved up, or been sponsored, or given 10-15 grand, then why not do it the right way? You have "The Budget".

So you are not in total disagreement after all

I guess the takehome message here is this. There are valid reasons as to why all the Gucci kit exists. Example: Need to break up that big blank wall behind your actor but aren't allowed to paint it? Use a gobo or some scrim. If you don't have it then sure, make some, or don't bother with it. If you want to spend the money and do it, that's cool too.

By the way, a good cinematographer is A GODSEND if they know what they're doing. You can just say, "I'm going for this look." and they go and do it. Fantastic!

Second that on the cinematographer, though its not just a case of saying "Im going for this look" it s lots of meetings before hand and test shoots with your DOP before hand

Anyhoot, enough. Here's what I think. Trying to do it the professional way (I am avoiding using the word industry here) when you have no money or you're just messing around is a waste of time, I agree.

Disagree, it puts you in good steed for the future, you want to play with the big boys then learn to ride a bike without stabilisers

BUT, if you have the cash and want to have your work taken onward, then it's a good idea. The people who went before us made all these mistakes and learnt the hard way. We may as well save ourselves the trouble.

just to add a footnore, paperwork, kit is all there for a reasons, apparently some chaps in hollywood swear by it and they seem to be making films

While, as an amateur, it's always good to hear that even when you have shitty equipment you can still make better stuff than people with professional equipment, I still think you should have set a goal somewhere. You can't always be thinking like an amateur, if you want to make money and want to go to festivals and cinemas you have got to meet their industries standards, that's a simple fact of this economy. You're not on your own, you're competing against others who DO have the luxury of spending thousands of dollars on their projects. And it only takes one of them to 'beat' yours.

And remember...

For the sake of ranting.....-he,hee,heee-

I think the problem comes with that:
"Everyone in this world has a different
definition of "INDY FILM"

My definaition:
It is a project that makes up in creativity, what it lacks in budget and can tend to go against industry standard.

>>>>>>>>>>>>Wa rning>>>>>>>>>>>& gt;>>>>>>>
-the following statement is Spunkey on a tyrantical soapbox, and does not apply to all Indy
production's-

----"I believe people are using the "Indy" Banner
over their projects as a way to be half ass and not invest the time to research and learn their craft-------------------------------------------
My favorite is when people say " I don't need to learn film -I'm "Indy" therefore standard rules
don't apply to me..........or "I have a computer
I don't need to know about film"
Haaaa!!!! OK- way to limit yourself!
>>>>>>>>>>>>&g t;>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>&g t;>>>>>>>>>>>&gt ;

Yet art is subjective-
But that's just me -

...been a while since a 3 page topic on here for a while, forums exist for this stuff.

Rock on eXposure forum!

Going back onto message here, I think that people will do what they can, you can't 'good advice' up pro equipment or the money to get it. Nor does pro equipment or doing it 'professionally' ensure good film-making technique or a good outcome.

I see chance 1234.......So, in summary, you agree with what everyone said. Even the opinions that broadly contradict the other opinions. Someone makes a statement and you agree with it, but find its antithesis equally tenable.

I hope you don't give me one star for that remark.

I guess the takehome message here is this. There are valid reasons as to why all the Gucci kit exists.
